Climate Change - the sequel...

Here are some more extracts from year ten's persuasive letters to the Prime Minister. They'd love a little feedback...

I am writing to you to inform you on a whole world crisis; global warming/climate change its not just about the ice-caps in the Antarctic melting down, if climate changes in Britain will be doomed !  It would warm up and more water would evaporate and cause more rain we have more of a chance stopping this catastrophe, if we take Action! Also we have examples of sea levels rising now for example the floods in Britain also when it rains canals rise. If this happens part of London would get wiped out by the sea if we don’t take action as a country we will be defenceless against the wild waves of the sea we could also be wiped out from humanity we would be defenceless against global warming/climate change and the rise of sea levels.

However, there is a solution to all these disastrous problems; we just need your help to solve them. We could try stopping it or slowing down the pace of it by cutting down how much we drive. If people used their car for a limited time a day and not go over that limit would help. Even walking more and longer distances can help the environment; it’s just the simple things we need to change that will have a massive effect on climate change. We could also try investing in urban public transport systems which are designed to minimise carbon emission and maximise access to jobs and services. It doesn’t take too much to do all this; just that everyone does there little bit each day.

You want to make a change, don’t you? Well make a change then. I’m writing to tell you we need to be more efficient with the fossil fuel we are using. You have children, you don’t want them growing up in a horrible world. No Polar Bears. No Penguins. You’re in charge of this country, take charge then. People listen to you, so if you say we need to change, people will.
By Josh

A 4C warmer world is so different from the current one. We can stop climate change, from being catastrophic by acting upon it quickly. But something needs to be done and it needs to be done now. What you can do is let people know more about climate change and the problems it will cause for the world later on. I can’t stress how much needs to be done. Why wait until the damage is done? By then it will be too late.
By Nevada
You’re the one in power, so that means you’re the one who can make the biggest change in this country, by setting laws/rules which can decrease the amount of waste gasses which are released into our atmosphere. Instead of using the power stations which burn fossil fuels use renewable energy’s such as wind farms, tidal and wave energy. Also cars can be made to run on electricity instead of petrol/diesel, if you do make this change then you won’t just be saving yourself but you’ll be saving your precious country as well.
By Ousman
You’d be surprised what we’re doing to the world blindly, but soon enough it will come clear and all the tremendously awful predictions from the scientists will rise. We will soon regret that David Cameron was a massive help to this dishonour of our planet and people will soon start to put the blame on you.

Climate Change - letters to the PM

After studying the climate change texts in the Edexcel IGCSE anthology, year ten wrote letters to the Prime Minister exhorting him to take action. Here are a few highlights. Let them know what you think.

I know you have very likely heard all this before, but I kindly ask you to listen to it again. We all now global warming is a problem, with some places heating up or becoming colder, sea levels rising, and glaciers melting. This affects wildlife, and of course, people. Your people. Your people may be fine now, but if climate change does not subside, the future generations will have to suffer for your and our idiotic mistakes. The current severity of the situation is dire, and something must change, the matter cannot be ignored any longer or it may lead to catastrophe.
By Charlotte.

Do you ever wonder what is happening to our environment? The world is heating up as we speak and we cannot do anything about it without your help, and consent. The ice-caps are melting. The deserts are getting hotter. Storms are increasing, and I know why.
By Hazel-Anne

But as I say things aren’t going to change immediately but gradually if we all try together we can succeed. Do something different, actually make a change, make a difference to everyone’s life not just your own.

By Misha

When your children become adults and are working, they may have to swim to their job. You alongside everyone in our country can make a change. Would you like to be the Prime Minister who changed this country or the Prime Minister who changed the ways of the world? We are the last generation that can change this catastrophic climate change. I’m not asking you to think economically, just realistically. This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. We should work together, as a team.  We as a country can make a change and if we do it then other countries will do the same and join us to a greener World. There is all this talk about action.
By Lewis

I’m prepared to make a stand against global warming but I’m nothing but a mere teenage boy. I doubt many people would listen to me but you’re David Cameron. You are the Prime Minister; people would be convinced to join in with the struggle against global warming if they were preached by such a wise man like yourself.
by Cameron

Do you care about the world and the animals?

If you don’t then you sir are a selfish man and it will be your job to explain to the human population why the animals are dying out and why more people around the world are dying.

Even more year ten poems...

The Arrow.

The arrow points at you, and you have to make a decision.
The arrow often forces you to do things you don't want to do.
But if you disobey the arrow, you die.

The arrow is everywhere.
It can be found in the homes of t wealthiest people.
But the arrow can be obtained by the most scared orphan.

The arrow is often controlled by monarchies
and contributes to their power.
When the pain is too great, you can turn
The arrow onto yourself
And end the suffering.

I am not an arrow, but I can point
You in the wrong direction.
Or end you life.

When the arrow is pointed at you
You have to make a decision
The arrow often forces you to do things you
            don't want to

But if you disobey the arrow you will die.

Freedom

All of the people,
Who walk on the street,
With only the freedom,
To walk with two feet.

Imprisoned, enslaved,
But some don't know,
When seeing new people,
Friend or foe?

Controlled by the master,
But some who do preach,
Not thinking or moving,
Being squeezed like a leech.

The new born baby lamb,
Blue as the sky,
Black as the night,
In the morning will fly.

What is freedom?
It's not what we have,
There's one more thing we need,
That one thing is love.

Whilst i lay here,
Resting my head,
Staring into blackness,
On my deathbed.

By Sam P.

Government

Why does the government
act like kids
and want what is not theirs?

people dying because they are small
people dying because they are insignificant
people dying because they have no choice
People dying for what?

Soldiers trying to help but getting killed
Soldiers trying to help and killing innocents
Soldiers trying to help and causing more pain.

Politicians, what's the point?
They are meant to help debt,
they say they're for the public,
But they use the public's money
On themselves...

Where's the help?

More poetry from year ten...

I filed complaint.

I look right and I see a bloodbath
I look left and I see my family without breath
I look in font of me and I see a happy soldier
Proud to have completed his mission.
I want to kill him but I can't because
I'm hurting physically and morally
So I looked at him and said
I filed a complaint against the man
His laws and his norms
His authority and his weapon
Hidden behind a uniform.
I filed complaint against you
You and your colleagues
Who obeyed without having an idea
About what you are going to commit.
Today you got to take the life of
My family and my only reason for living
But know that nobody is above the laws
Because each person has rights
And one day we will judge you for your actions.

By King Bahdon

War Poem.

What is war?

War is invading another country
Looking for someone, to get the big bounty
Killing innocent people
Terrorising cities
Families torn apart
Children without parents
Is this war?
Is this freedom?
Government's corrupt
Protesters pleading for change.
Soldiers at battle
Police at battle
The world at battle.
But battling who?

By Habib N

Nobody knows

nobody knows what goes on in there
not even the people that really care
the battle within
that you seem to think you can't win.
the depression and thought that you've let everyone down
not noticing the circumstances around
not caring where you would be found
the people you leave behind
will have to catch and find
what you didn't sign
while having to come to the thought of your kind.
people say you're a coward
but I think you were overpowered
you put too much on your plate
and you tried, and ate
but the fate was not going to debate

Year Ten's poetry...

Lybia - for something more.

Lybia, stuck in civil war,
It needs to change from how it was before,
NATO has joined in the fight,
Bombing government troops with their great might;
Is this a fight for freedom, or a fight for oil?
Either way, it will end in turmoil.
Their government's trying to oppress,
Gadaffi is the bad guy, something he must confess.

The rebels fight because they want peace,
Beacause the government's trying to keep them on a leash.
Fighting for their mother, wife and child,
For protesting, they may have been trialled.
More government troops, the rebels in dismay,
NATO bombs, oh wahey!

Are they fighting because us they adore?
Or are they really fighting for something more?

Sad and Sorrow

The sad and the sorrow runs through deep
I weep and weep as I chimney sweep,
Dreaming about fighting for freedom together,
But I've lost my parents to the church forever.

My eyes wandering looking at the sky,
realisng the truth for the end being nigh,
Being alive is all I regret,
Even though I am living in death.

By Tapiwa K

I am the hatred against your sexuality, religion and race,
I will discriminate you because of the colour of your face.
I don't care if I'm making you angry or sad,
Because not associating with you makes me glad.

I will have people telling you how to live your life,
make sure you don't turn gay and get a husband or wife.
I'd hurt you, physically and mentally, I'd abuse you,
I'd treat you like the dirt on my shoe.

You have no freedom, not allowed to speak,
Because if you're not like me, you're a freak!
If we don't look the same, haven't got the same colour of face
I will hate you because of your sexuality, religion and race!

By Olivia B

As I'm made to work long hours per day,
A bowl of rice is my only pay
Stitching away, my fingers hurt
Smelling of sweat and covered in dirt.

A day will come when I'll be free
Knowing the rights, I will see
Looking at the past, I will weep
Thinking of the pain, I'll be thinking deep.

Light light freedom is here
Police are here, I have nothing to fear
Packing my bags I'll think of memories
Dropping tears, the past, I will reminisce.

It's better to be happy than to be rich.

It’s better to be happy than rich.
by
Jessica

My brother was sleeping rough on the street until he won a million pounds. He’s now spending money like there’s no tomorrow. As a result, our family has fallen apart. So in my opinion, it’s better to be happy than rich.

My brother spent all his money on nothing but rubbish. Example one: he bought a mansion that he doesn’t even like living in. Example two: He bought three cars and he can only drive one at a time!  So the other two just sit in the garage, costing him money; that’s basically a big waste of money.  My brother wasted all his money, now he’s back on the streets.

Happiness brings families together, money divides families. My brother was filthy rich for a year and money tore our family apart because he didn’t spend any of that year with us. My brother ignored us, but we tried to talk to him. He wouldn’t let us. In fact, during the year he didn’t have anything to do with us. My mother cried all day and all night until he came back to us after he’d spent all his money.

If you’re happy you are free. On the other hand, if you’re rich people will be your friend for your money and bribe you for hundreds and thousands of pounds. People you don’t even know will come after you for your money because they want the money for brand new houses that they don’t need. I personally think that children of rich people often get spoilt. If you want to put your children at risk of getting kidnapped, then get filthy rich and show off about it. You could be putting your life at risk and your children might get kidnapped for a ransom.

My brother lives with us now. He has learnt his lesson. He got a job and a beautiful wife. Last year they had a healthy baby boy. They only have one child and a nephew (which is my sister’s). So it’s better to be happy than rich. We may not be the wealthiest family in the world, but we have our wonderful family, lots of love and a better life.
